Apolline is the Princess of Destiny.
As a unicorn filly, her parents really wanted her to follow in their hoofsteps and excel in what they deemed fit. But as she grew up, she felt like she only fell further behind. Her friends found their purposes, and she watched them pursue her dreams with unimaginable pain, knowing she still had none of her own.
On a trip to clear her mind, she found a petite, blossoming village - Our Town. She met Starlight Glimmer and fell in love with her cause. In the hope of not having to feel so torn and empty without a clear purpose, she joined the village. She went through the cutie-unmarking and lived there for many years. She felt like she had finally found home, a place where it's okay to just exist, somewhere where she wasn't falling behind.
But her hopes were quickly crushed when the Mane Six found the village. Horrified by the truth of Starlight Glimmer's betrayal and the cutie remarking of all the townspeople, she fled. She lived in the Everfree Forest in isolation for a year afterward. During a quick trip to Ponyville, she heard the news - Starlight Glimmer has befriended Princess Twilight Sparkle and her friends.
In her confusion, she nervously reunited with Starlight Glimmer. She stuck around, and became friends with Starlight once more. Starlight showed her around Ponyville, and even inside the castle, where she met Princess Twilight Sparkle again. She was inspired by the idea of her lessons and Starlight's progress, and pleaded to be taken on as a student as well.
In her time studying under Princess Twilight and alongside Starlight, she was faced with many trials of self-worth and belonging. She had spent so much of her life feeling inferior to everypony. But with every friendship problem she helped solve, she discovered so much kindness within her - she believed that everypony had their own purpose, and no pony was any more deserving than anypony else.
And after helping so many ponies, she found worth in herself too.
